Public Relations & Organizational Communication Concentration (6/00)

This concentration is theory-based, emphasizing the art and science of managing communication programs to improve employee quality of work life and organizational effectiveness.  Persons completing the program are prepared to enter graduate study and communication professions in any organizational context.

The Public Relations & Organizational Communication Concentration requires 36 credit hours in Communication and 3 credit hours in English.  At least 12 of the 36 hours in Communication must be taken at the 300 or 400 level.  (In the Public Relations concentration, this requirement is automatically satisfied by completing the courses required for the concentration.)

A minor in a professional area (for example, business management, computer science, etc.) is recommended.

Phase 1: Introductory Phase (to be completed during the freshman year or 1st semester of the sophomore year)

ENG 214, Introduction to Editing (Writing and Editing Requirement)

NOTE 1: Students choosing this concentration must also complete ENG 214, Introduction to Editing, which should be completed during Phase 2.

NOTE 2: COM 486 may also be used to satisfy the Departmental Restricted Elective.  However, while COM 486 will satisfy two requirements, it only counts as 3 hours toward graduation.

Phase 3: Theory Development Phase (to be completed 2nd semester of the junior year or 1st semester of the senior year; Phases 1 and 2 must be completed before beginning Phase 3)

NOTE 3: Students who do not meet the 3.0 GPA required for the Communication Internship will not graduate in the Public Relations and Organizational Communication Concentration.

Departmental Elective (3 Credit Hours)

Any Communication course (except COM 146) not being used to fulfill other requirements may be used as a Departmental Elective.
