COM Undergrad News: August 2019

Welcome to the 2019-2020 academic year! I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. 

This year I will be sending out a monthly newsletter with information on upcoming events, key department information, internship opportunities, and other relevant news. Donise Benton, the department’s undergraduate services coordinator, will still be sending out more time-sensitive information via email. 

I will have drop-in hours the first day of classes (August 21) from 10:30 a.m-12:30 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. No appointment is necessary. Stop by if you have any questions.

Graduating Seniors

If you are planning on graduating in December 2019, please make sure to submit your graduation application. Graduation applications should be submitted by Friday, August 23

Complete the Graduation Application by logging into MyPack Portal and following the instructions below:

  1. Select your Student Homepage.
  2. Select the Planning & Enrollment tile.
  3. From the left-hand navigation menu, select Apply for Graduation.
  4. Select the Apply for Graduation link under the intended program.
  5. Select your intended graduation term from the drop-down menu.
  6. Select Continue.
  7. Verify all graduation data and select Submit.

The following message will display on the next screen: “You have successfully applied for graduation.”

If you plan to graduate in May 2020, please meet with your academic advisor or with me to make sure you are on track for your planned graduation. To schedule a meeting with me, please go to my appointment calendar.

Important Dates

August 27: Last day to add a course without instructor permission.

Sept. 4: Last day to add a course with permission of instructor. Last day for tuition refunds due to dropping a course or changing from credit to audit. Last day for undergraduate students to drop below 12 hours or to drop a course without a W grade.

Upcoming Events

PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) has tentatively scheduled its first meeting for Sept. 12 (time and place TBD). More information will follow in early September.

Internship Opportunities

  • Creative Services, a department within NC State Athletics, has unpaid internship positions available, primarily for freshman and sophomores, to assist in capturing and creating video and digital content for the university’s 21 athletic programs. A link to the application is here.
  • The Gregg Museum of Art and Design has a marketing internship position available. For more information, please review their internship description.
  • NC State Registration and Records is currently hiring for two paid intern positions: a communication and publications intern (ePACK job ID: 113536), and a digital communications intern (ePACK job ID: 113525). Please either apply through ePACK, or contact Jessica Bronchick (
  • Empire Properties (All Saints Chapel, The Stockroom at 203, and The Glass Box) has internship opportunities consisting of event sales, communication, social media and marketing. For more information, please view their internship description.
  • Disney College Program – Application opens Monday, August 19th. Find out more information on their website.
  • Disney Professional & Management Internships – Many of these applications will open in mid-August.  However, there will be other “PI” postings throughout the recruitment season, so check the site periodically for additional opportunities. Qualified students should apply as soon as possible since closing dates can widely vary. Management internships specifically are only open for a brief period of time. Learn more here.

Career Development

PackPros Professional Development Series is a series of free career readiness and professional development workshops. They are starting off the semester with a “dress for success” event: the JC Penny Suit-Up Event, which includes 60% off clothing. The event is Sept. 8 from 6-9 p.m.

On-Campus Employment

NC State’s Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes is looking to hire tutors for the Fall 2019 semester. Learn more about the opportunities here.

Qualifications for all tutor positions: Must have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average, demonstrate proficiency in coursework and/or have received a B+ or higher in the courses selected to tutor. Must abide by North Carolina State University, NCAA and ASPSA rules and regulations. Must be able to teach academic success strategies to a diverse student population in a one-on-one or small group setting. Must have the ability to effectively communicate verbally and have skills to develop written reports. Must be attentive to detail and accurate in record keeping. Preference can be given to individuals who have tutoring experience or other educational qualifications. Preference is given to individuals who are a sophomore or higher standing.
