I’ve always had a knack for photography and videography, and I’ve wanted to pursue these interests while working alongside a team of communication innovators.
When University Human Resources offered me the chance to work as an intern with its Marketing, Communications and Technology Support team, I relished the opportunity. Working with the team for the past nine months has been a pleasure.
I’m a student in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences studying communication media. I’ve loved my experience as an intern, and I feel prepared to transition to graduate school and the professional world after I graduate in May. I love connecting with others and wanted to study in a field where I’m able to make human connections constantly. I have a passion for content creation and want to pursue a career that allows me to use my creative side and make new things.
The internship has allowed me to work on some great projects. Examples include editing and filming a video advertising the launch of the new UHR website last fall, writing an article for the monthly UHR newsletter, filming and editing a holiday video and helping take photos for UHR’s online directory. My next project will be filming and editing a video advertising UHR’s new concierge service.
These projects have helped me build up my portfolio and helped me grow as a content creator. I’ve used software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Lightroom and Canva Pro. I have also become much more familiar with using our Sony video camera and setting up photography shoots. I had never done graphic design editing before, but I explored it when I made the website video. I’ve enjoyed being a part of a team that works together and having the MCATS team’s support when doing projects.
I was interested in this internship opportunity because I wanted to get experience in the human resources field. Communication is a big part of HR, and I wanted to see how an HR office functions. Although I’ve been working in a marketing and communications capacity, I’ve learned about many different roles in HR.
I’m thankful for the growth opportunities this internship has provided me and for the great exposure to a professional HR environment. I’m excited to attend graduate school at UNC-Chapel Hill, where I’ll be in a one-year program studying strategic communications. The graduate program will allow me to learn the marketing and advertising skills I will need to be an effective communicator and one day lead my own marketing team. I believe this internship and the skills it has provided me helped me get into the selective and prestigious graduate program at UNC-Chapel Hill. I’m incredibly thankful for this amazing experience.
